This was my favorite moment of the episode, which is saying a lot because the majority of the episode was phenomenal.
But it reminds me how much we don’t see of Kurt and Blaine’s relationship. I always wondered how Burt would adjust to Kurt having a boyfriend, a real, solid, not going anywhere boyfriend. And I think we get a little glimpse here.
I think that after Burt got over the initial shock of having to deal with his son being in a relationship, something neither he or Kurt expected to happen until he was living in New York, Burt became that parent that’s way too invested. Because suddenly Kurt was smiling all the time, and Burt hadn’t seen him smile like that since he was little. And he gorges himself on it.
He waits up for Kurt after dates sometimes, not because he doesn’t trust him but because he likes the look Kurt’s always sporting when he walks in. At the beginning it was every time, and he’d ask Kurt how his night was, and Kurt would sigh and smile and maybe give him a detail or two. After he got back from Regionals, he collapsed on the couch next to Burt and rested his head on his shoulder and said “He told me he loves me” and Burt’s heart clenched because this, this is what he’s wanted most for Kurt.
He doesn’t do it as often now, because the dopey grin is more often accompanied by mussed hair and flushed cheeks and it’s not because he’s gay it’s because he’s his son and there are just things he doesn’t need to think about. But he still does it once in a while, asks how Blaine is with a raised eyebrow and laughs at the fact that he can make Kurt blush.
And it’s not just that Kurt has someone, it’s that he has Blaine, who is willing to stick his neck out for Kurt’s sake but not really his own, but that’s alright because Kurt’s just as protective as he is. He trusts them with each other, and he likes Blaine, he really does. He tried to do the intimidating father thing but it was really just for the sake of it, for the rite of passage he’s earned as a father, the right to scare his son’s boyfriend. But the kid is just so damn earnest that it takes the fun out of it (maybe not all the fun - if he stares at Blaine long enough without breaking eye contact, he can still make him stutter).
And Burt wishes Blaine had been able to be at school that day because he knows that they’re jockeying for most important man in Kurt’s life but it’s not even a fight he cares to win because he knows there’s room for them both. He was worried that knowing Blaine would still be in Ohio would make Kurt question his plan to leave because yeah, they’re young, but they’re so decided on each other and sometimes when you know, you just know, but Blaine was practically filling out Kurt’s application, he was so supportive and excited, and Burt really wants to see the look on Blaine’s face when he hears the news.
