This was my favorite moment of the episode, which is saying a lot because the majority of the episode was phenomenal.
But it reminds me how much we don’t see of Kurt and Blaine’s relationship. I always wondered how Burt would adjust to Kurt having a boyfriend, a real, solid, not going anywhere boyfriend. And I think we get a little glimpse here.
I think that after Burt got over the initial shock of having to deal with his son being in a relationship, something neither he or Kurt expected to happen until he was living in New York, Burt became that parent that’s way too invested. Because suddenly Kurt was smiling all the time, and Burt hadn’t seen him smile like that since he was little. And he gorges himself on it.
He waits up for Kurt after dates sometimes, not because he doesn’t trust him but because he likes the look Kurt’s always sporting when he walks in. At the beginning it was every time, and he’d ask Kurt how his night was, and Kurt would sigh and smile and maybe give him a detail or two. After he got back from Regionals, he collapsed on the couch next to Burt and rested his head on his shoulder and said “He told me he loves me” and Burt’s heart clenched because this, this is what he’s wanted most for Kurt.
He doesn’t do it as often now, because the dopey grin is more often accompanied by mussed hair and flushed cheeks and it’s not because he’s gay it’s because he’s his son and there are just things he doesn’t need to think about. But he still does it once in a while, asks how Blaine is with a raised eyebrow and laughs at the fact that he can make Kurt blush.
And it’s not just that Kurt has someone, it’s that he has Blaine, who is willing to stick his neck out for Kurt’s sake but not really his own, but that’s alright because Kurt’s just as protective as he is. He trusts them with each other, and he likes Blaine, he really does. He tried to do the intimidating father thing but it was really just for the sake of it, for the rite of passage he’s earned as a father, the right to scare his son’s boyfriend. But the kid is just so damn earnest that it takes the fun out of it (maybe not all the fun - if he stares at Blaine long enough without breaking eye contact, he can still make him stutter).
And Burt wishes Blaine had been able to be at school that day because he knows that they’re jockeying for most important man in Kurt’s life but it’s not even a fight he cares to win because he knows there’s room for them both. He was worried that knowing Blaine would still be in Ohio would make Kurt question his plan to leave because yeah, they’re young, but they’re so decided on each other and sometimes when you know, you just know, but Blaine was practically filling out Kurt’s application, he was so supportive and excited, and Burt really wants to see the look on Blaine’s face when he hears the news.
He’s all sweaty and glorious and ungdihgujeskrgrldgh.
“Blaine!” Kurt was on his knees beside Blaine in seconds. His heart lodged in his throat as he watched his boyfriend curl up in a fetal position and writhe on the ground in pain. “Blaine what’s wrong – what’s the matter?” Kurt tried to pry Blaine’s hands from his face, his eyes, but Blaine wouldn’t move them. “Let me see – come on Blaine let me see!”
“But it was just a slushy.” Kurt heard Puck saying in confusion. He couldn’t bother to waste any energy glaring at the other boy though – not when Blaine was crying out like this and Kurt felt like his own heart was being ripped to pieces with each painful sound.
“Dude that’s not a normal slushy – that’s not ice.” He heard Finn saying, but it didn’t really sink in since he was far too focused on Blaine.
“Blaine come on please…”
Blaine didn’t respond except to roll toward Kurt and practically curl himself around Kurt’s torso as he sobbed painfully. Kurt leaned over Blaine, rubbing a hand up and down his back, and managing to at least get one hand away from Blaine’s face by lacing their fingers together. Blaine’s fingers gripped his so tightly Kurt knew that it would be hurting if he’d had the capacity to focus on his own pain at that moment, but he didn’t have room for that, all Kurt had room for was Blaine’s.
It seemed like it was Blaine’s right eye that was hurting him, since that’s the one he kept covered. His left eye was clenched shut tightly against the pain with a steady stream of tears leaking out that broke Kurt’s heart as he used the fingers of his free hand to wipe as much of the slushy, or what looked like slushy but felt like wet rocks, as he could away.
“It’s okay Blaine I’m right here. I’m right here… Finn!” Kurt cried brokenly, feeling himself wanting to curl up and sob as well. He’d never seen Blaine like this before and it scared the living hell out of him. Blaine was happy, and excited, even angry, and yeah sometimes sad, but never like this – never hurt.
“He went to get your car Kurt. He’ll be here any second.” Mercedes answered as Mike and Puck crouched down beside he and Blaine with concerned expressions.
Blaine clung to Kurt while his other hand pressed against his eye. “Don’t rub – don’t rub it Blaine.” Kurt shifted, resting Blaine’s head in his lap and curling his upper body around Blaine’s head protectively, running his fingers through his now messy curls and kissing his temple and down to his ear. “Shh, shh, shh it’ll be okay I promise. You’ll be okay. I’m right here. I’m not leaving you. I love you.”
Kurt really didn’t know what he was whispering, or why, but it seemed to help as Blaine’s sobs died down until he was only panting harshly. It seemed like forever before Finn got back with the Navigator and then he was there and with the help of Puck was lifting Blaine off of the hard, cold concrete and loading him into the back along with Kurt, who he wouldn’t let go of.
Blaine turned himself around until he could bury himself back in Kurt’s arms. Kurt rubbed his hands up and down Blaine’s back and shoulder, running his fingers through his hair, and kissing him over and over again. He didn’t know what else to do, but he wished more than anything that he could take Blaine’s pain away – pain that should have been his in the first place.
Blaine had pushed Kurt out of the way, taken that slushy for him, a concoction that had intentionally been meant to hurt him, and as Kurt thought about it tears began leaking down his own cheeks. God he hated Sebastian. He’d never hated anyone really, even his own bullies, but Kurt wanted to hurt Sebastian. Physically hurt him and make him scream like Blaine had, make him suffer the way Blaine was, and the feeling made Kurt sick.
Kurt pressed his lips against the top of Blaine’s head, clenched his eyes closed against the onslaught of anger and tears, and held Blaine tighter, rocking him and wishing more than anything that Blaine had just let it hit him instead.
